Diamond-like carbon films are created with a mixture of graphite and diamond state carbon atoms. Usually about 70-80% graphite (Carbon with sp2 hybrid electron orbitals) and 20-30% diamond (Carbon with sp3 hybrid electron orbitals) the main purpose for the creation of DLC films is to form a strong yet somewhat inexpensive material that makes a highly NONreactive coating for chemical tools and other possilbe engineering devices. Research is still being done on their proper (most efficient) developement. Also, the mechanism of creation is still theoretical speculation, but should be uncovered in the near future.
