The Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel is a vehicular tunnel that is 8,491 feet or 1.693 miles. The tunnel lies about 60 miles west of Denver, Colorado. The Eisenhower Tunnel passes directly under the Continental Divide.

The Tunnel sits at about 11,000 ft above sea level. This measurement varies depending on where you are in the tunnel.

The interior dimensions of the tunnel are 16 feet 4 inches from the pavement to the tile ceiling. The clearance has been adjusted to 13 feet 6 inches with the addition of road warning signs. The are two lanes of travel in each direction with 13 feet of space in each lane. Add all that to the walkway and the total width of each tunnel is 29 feet.

The Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel is the highest vehicular tunnel in the world, and it feels every inch of it, at least when you're approaching it from the west, as I did during a roadtrip in 1996.

Signs along Interstate 70 warned drivers that vehicles may be subject to vapor lock as the altitude increased. I remember, at one point, looking off to my right and seeing clouds below me, an experience which had previously been reserved for plane rides.
