A character in Victor Hugo's Les Miserables. He's rather more important in the musical than in the novel. In the novel, he's supplementary; he provides a good example for the romantic lead and instigates revolution. He's not overwhelmingly important.

In the musical, he's the guy with the red vest who shouts and jumps on tables and builds a barricade.

In both, depending on whom one asks, he is one of Marius's best friends and is adored by Grantaire.
