George F. Elliot was born November 30, 1846, in Alabama and was in United States Military Academy, however two years later he was honorably discharged. Elliot became a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He served in Panama but it was not until he served in the Spanish American War that he received any notice or fame. After the war, he served as commander of a battalion in the Philippines.

Elliot became the 10th commandant of the Marine Corps in 1903. During his time as commandant, he struggled with keeping the Marines aboard capital ships and to merge the Corps with the Army. He retired in 1910 and died on November 4, 1931.
