Glen Cook is a fantasy/science fiction author. He (I hear rumors that this may in fact be the wrong pronoun, but I figure it's safest to stick with the identity the author has created for public consumption) has written quite a few books, most notably the Black Company series and the Garrett, P.I. series. A complete bibliography, by universe, is included (thanks to the Glen Cook Fan Page (, accessed on 11/26/2000) for this information), with commentary to follow:

The Haunting Dread Empire
The Starfishers Future
The Black Company
From the Files of Garrett, P.I.
The Dragon Never Sleeps

I happen to think that Glen Cook is the most underappreciated author I've ever read. His stuff has a simplicity and directness of phrasing that I've never seen anywhere else, and yet there is subtlety there. It's difficult to describe, but I find him much more compelling than Robert Jordan or J.K. Rowling. Though the middle books are a little depressing, the Black Company books are really excellent, and the Garrett stuff is light and amusing without having quite the slapstick, subtle-as-a-blowtorch feel of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. In addition, I have recently become aware that the Garrett novels' main characters bear a striking resemblance to Archie Goodwin and Nero Wolfe, characters in a very long series of mystery novels by Rex Stout.
