Hassium is a synthetic element that is not present in the environment. Isolation of an observable quantity of hassium has never been achieved, and thus hassium has no known uses. The reactivity of hassium is unknown, but is assumed to be similar to rhenium and technetium.
Hassium was first synthesized in 1984 at the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung a.k.a the Institute for Heavy Ion Research a.k.a. GSI in Darmstadt, Germany. After ten days of bombarding Lead(208) with Iron(58) they produced a total of three atoms of hassium via
Lead(208) + Iron(58) = Hassium(265) + 1 neutron
It can also be produced in the breakdown of Uun via
Ununnilium(277) = Hassium(273) + Helium(4)
Element 108 was officially named hassium in 1997; named for the Latin word Hassias meaning Hesse, the German state.
