These members of the Roman Army were the youngest component of the Heavy Infantry. In contrast to the Velites they were armored, and carried a heavier sword, a long javelin, and a shield called a scutum. Their uniform consisted of an armored helmet which was crested with fur or feathers, a bronze breastplate, a greave for their left shin.
