Based in Geneva, Switzerland, the International Federation of Building and Wood Workers or IFBWW is the global union federation for workers in the building, wood, forestry and allied sectors. (Which therefore potentially includes all industries that use wood as a raw material.) It has a total of 289 affiliated unions from 125 countries with a combined membership of over 10 million. The federation's mission is to promote the development of trades unions in these sectors throughout the world and to promote and enforce workers rights in the context of sustainable development.
In 1998 the IFBWW signed a cooperation agreement with IKEA (the large Swedish furniture retailer) to agree on minim standards regarding working conditions and health and safety to be adopted at the companies that manufacture and supply goods for IKEA.
