Jan Tinbergen was born in 1903 in the
The Hague,
The Netherlands. He studied
mathematics and
theoretical physics at the
University of Leiden after earning his
PhD in
physics, he went on to become professor of economics at
The Netherlands School of Economics in
Rotterdam.
He shared the
Nobel Prize in Economics with
Ragnar Frisch for developing the first
macroeconomics model.
After working briefly for the
League of Nations, he went on to become the director of the
Dutch Central Planning Bureau in 1945-1955.
The
Jan Tinbergen Award was created in his honor at
The International Statistical Institutein the Netherlands.
The
Jan Tinbergen Scholarships Programme named in his honor offers 40 scholarships a year to students in developing countries.
