In Les Misérables, Javert is the police constable that is only concerned about justice. He is consumed upon catching the "criminal" Jean Valjean, or 24601. Part of Javert's anger and contempt comes from the fact that he himself was born in a jail and yet was able to rise above the common scum to his prestigious position. After shown mercy by Valjean, he commits suicide by falling of a bridge.
