Jeera (जीरा) is the Hindi word for cumin. It is commonly pronounced 'jeereh' (IPA /ˈdʒiːɹə/), although you will also see the forms zeera, zira, and jiru (this last from the Sanskrit જીરું, or jīrũ).

In the English speaking world you are most likely to come across this word in the names of foods and drinks containing cumin as one of their primary spices, e.g., the dhana jiru spice mix of coriander and cumin (dhania being Hindi for coriander), jeera water (often used to treat morning sickness), jeera rice, and jeera aloo.

It should perhaps be noted that hing jeera is a common spice combination in Indian cooking. The 'hing' refers to asafetida, which most westerners will find the much stronger of the two spices, and some people find quite unpleasant.
