Commander of the French forces during much of the First World War. Orchestrated a series of offensives such as Vimy Ridge, all of which involved massive loss of life, and was a great believer in the policy of attrition. He also believed that Britain should take a greater role in the war, and exhorted successive British Generals to launch more offensives. He was superseded first by Nivelle and later by Petain.
