On this day, May 16th, in 1975, Junko Tabei became the first woman to climb Mount Everest.
Born in 1939, the 5th daughter in her family, she was often characterized as being frail and weak. Obviously, this didn't deter her for at the ripe old age of 53, she has conquered sixty-nine major mountains. In 1992, she became the first woman to climb the highest mountains in Earth's seven major regions.
Today, she still aspires to climb the highest mountain in every country, while also concentrating on her family. She's married and has a daughter and son.
