KARE

Kettering Advanced Research Education was, for its time, a very bold experiment in educating gifted students in public schools.

In 1987, the school system of Kettering, Ohio converted an old warehouse adjacent to an elementary school into a small school. Two or three schools would send their "gifted class" (about 20 kids, 4th-6th grades) to this converted warehouse. And they hooked us up. Back when schools were doing good to have one computer per class, we had 1 for every 3 of us. Camcorders, robots (ok, so it didn't work very often, but we had the damn thing!), microscopes, we had all this equipment, and teachers that encouraged us to think, creatively and logically. Research projects were also stressed, and this funky old thing, ARPAnet.
