A kalpa was once defined for me as:

"Imagine there's a bird with a silk scarf in its mouth. Every year, the bird flies over the top of Mount Sumeru. Each time it flies over, the scarf brushes the top of the mountain.

A kalpa is the amount of time it takes for the mountain to be worn down to nothing."

Kal"pa (?), n. [Skr.] Hind. Myth.

One of the Brahmanic eons, a period of 4,320,000,000 years. At the end of each Kalpa the world is annihilated.
