This plane algebraic curve was studied by Exodus some time around 400 BC. Exodus, who was part of Plato's school, was interested in this curve in connection with doubling the cube, one of the three geometric problems of antiquity.

An equation for the curve is a2x4=b4(x2 + y2) , for some constant real numbers a,b.
