French for either book or one American pound depending on gender. Male (le or un livre) is a book; female (la or une livre) is one pound (being about .45 kilograms). Plural, of course, is les/des livres either way. THBZ informs me that it isn't often used in re. to weight any longer.

Li"vre (?), n. [F., fr. L. libra a pound of twelve ounces. Cf. Lira.]

A French money of account, afterward a silver coin equal to 20 sous. It is not now in use, having been superseded by the franc.
