Sanskrit for "great being". A title given to a highly evolved, spiritual person, deserving of great respect.

Comparable to the Hindu title of Mahatma, but preferred by Buddhists due to the anatman concept of Buddhism.

An example of its use is in the Heart Sutra, at least the longer version which starts by saying that a large number of Bodhisattvas and Mahasattvas were gathered.
