Newell Convers Wyeth (1882-1945) was a popular American painter and illustrator in the first half of the 20th century. His painting style was similar to that
of his teacher, Howard Pyle, and N.C. is perhaps the most famous graduate of Pyle's Wilmington School of art, with
Maxfield Parrish a close second.
Wyeth is best known and beloved for his illustrations of children's classics Kidnapped and
Treasure Island, the latter including his famous illustration of Blind Pew. He was a doting father of five children, four of whom became artists in their own right, including Andrew Wyeth and Henriette Wyeth-Hurd (the fifth child became a successful engineer).
N.C. Wyeth was killed in 1945 along with his infant grandson
when his car stalled on railroad tracks near the family home in Pennsylvania.
