Nancy Willard was born on June 26, 1936. When she was little she always loved to read and draw, and she grew up to do both. She and her sister made up and published a newspaper, interviewing their neighbors for feature stories.

Willard won the Newbery in 1982. To see her exuberant reaction, see http://www.carr.lib.md.us/read/newbery-nancy.htm.
