A prestigious Soviet military award, this medal is named for
Alexander Nevsky, who in 1242 repelled the
Teutonic Knights from Russia. Established in 1942 and awarded from 1942-1945. Given to the
USSR's finest men.
Consists of a Red Star sitting on a silver background, with Nevsky's head and name inside of a circle. Crossed axes (rah!) are behind the star and the circle is surrounded by laurel branches (a symbol of victory). Below Nevsky is a shield bearing the hammer and sickle.
