African-American hipster comic, born John Elroy Sanford (hence the surname of the character he played on the long-running sitcom Sanford and Son). Known, prior to television fame, for his "bawdy" humor (captured on popular pieces of vinyl in that era), though he kept his language clean and let the audience's dirty minds fill in the blanks around the dot dot dot. A great, old-school comic virtuoso, progenitor of the likes of Flip Wilson and Richard Pryor.
