The Runestaff is one of three sentient, and extremely powerful, key
artifacts appearing in
Michael Moorcock's
Eternal Champion multiverse.
The Runestaff manipulates the world so that so that it maintains a certain
balance of power. Should the balance of power be
tipped, as with Granbretan's extremely powerful
empire in the
Dorian Hawkmoon chronicles, the Runestaff will manipulate the very threads of
Fate to correct it. It also projects
stars and other impressive
lighting effects, like a portable
planetarium.
Sometimes it's
soul will jump out and for a look around. It
manifests itself as a boy with
oriental features named
Jherek Carnelien.
