SPARS is the acronym derived from Semper Paratus (Always Ready), The motto of the U.S. Coast Guard. During World War 2, it was the name of the USCG's women's branch. The branch was formed in November of 1942 and had a peak strength of 11,000 before being disbanded in late 1946. The women performed many non-combat services such as cooks on land and skeleton crews used to ferry ships to various ports from their manufacturers.
