The song itself is a thinly-veiled imitation of
The Beatles' '
I am the Walrus'. The album, which was actually called 'The Seeds of Love', took four years, three producers, and a quarter of a million pounds to record, partially due to an array of guest musicians including Kate St. John and
Phil Collins, oddly enough, who played drums on 'Woman in Chains'.
It, this single, and 'Woman in Chains' were quite popular at the time; since then, Curt Smith left the band, and Roland Orzabal has released two further Tears for Fears albums, without anything approaching the same impact.
