Born in Leonardtown, Maryland, Simon Spearman Lancaster III grew up on a tobacco farm. He attended high school in La Plata, and then the University of Maryland.
After two years at Maryland, Spear left to pursue a successful career in sales and marketing, working at Rubbermaid, and then founding his own company. He married his wife Dee in 1956, and has two sons, Simon and Jackson.
After selling his business in 2000, Spear took up politics full-time. He currently running for Governor of Maryland on the Libertarian ticket, against Kathleen Kennedy-Townsend and Robert Ehrlich.
He resides in Crownsville in a house that he built himself.
