A big
1967 hit for
soul singer Arthur Conley. Originally, Conley, a big fan of the late
Sam Cooke, just wanted to do a
cover of Cooke's "Yeah Man", but
Otis Redding, Conley's mentor of sorts, started changing the song around, into a soul
list song celebrating the stars of the day. So composer credits went to Redding, Conley (for adding Redding's name to the list - Otis was far too modest to do that), and, from the grave, Sam Cooke.
Although this was one of Stax Records' biggest 45s, it was actually recorded at Muscle Shoals' Fame Studios, which would eventually supplant Stax as the epicenter of Soul.
