Syndactyly is a
congenital condition in which two or more fingers or toes are joined together. Sydactyly of the toes is more common that syndactyly of the
fingers.
Syndactyly can be
inherited, and is more common in men than in women. In cases in which the defect is not inherited it can be caused by abnormal conditions in the
womb. It is not usually associated with other
birth defects.
In milder cases only the skin of the fingers or toes is joined together, but when more serious, the bones can be fused, and there can even be a shared nail. However the condition can be easily cured by a routine operation in childhood to separate the affected fingers or toes.
