Thorne Bay is a city on Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska (the "Panhandle"). At one time, it was the largest logging camp in the world, with a population of about 600 people, 1200 dogs, 6 bears, and a transient pack of wolves.

Growing up in Thorne Bay was wonderful. The school got an Apple // sometime in 1977; this was my introduction to computers.

These days, Thorne Bay is a rather depressed city with no real economic base. In that respect, I imagine it's a bit like the Eastern US steel and coal towns.
