I give great thanks on this grey Saturday

while still in my nightgown

the weather expected to be rainy

then forty two degrees Fahrenheit

Gathering the last of winter's logs

to burn tonight, a functional fire

to clear away creosote buildup

in the flue and wood stove

But back to my eternal gratitude

before noon, to the one who got away

underneath more bricks

underneath a drizzling sky

underneath a wet log

A tiny salamander or newt

(as we once called them)

reminding me that the two

I already captured today

(in my childish delight)

were and are more than enough
