The Upper Empordà region of Spain's Catalonia features a strong, cold and gusty north wind called the Tramuntana ('from across the mountains'). This wind reaches speeds of over 120 km/h and blows for many days in a row. It causes the sky to be predominantly cloudless, and over time has carved ridges in the massifs of the region. It has been known to overturn wheeled vehicles and rail cars.
