A train station that is the second or third most important traffic junction in Tokyo, joining (among others) the Ginza and Hibiya subway lines with the Yamanote line and some important commuter lines towards the prefectures to the north and east of Tokyo. The Shinkansen also stops here.

Among the non-traffic-related features of Ueno are a large zoo and Ueno park, which is completely open to the public and therefore populated by many homeless people.
