Virtual Test Track Experiment
A $10 million study by the Ford Research Laboratory in Dearborn, Michigan to gauge driver's abilities to use cell phones and other navigational systems, while driving. Scientists recreate the driving experience with video screens that display scenery and pavement, and digital synthesizers that produce engine, wind, and traffic noise. The vehicle itself is bolted to a six-legged hydraulic platform that pitches and yaws to simulate motion. Sensors record data on speed, steering, and reaction times, while cameras capture driver's hand, eye, and foot movements.
It's really all quite frightening when you realize a high percentage of drivers have a really hard time with just that; driving.
