A phrase describing a change in
fashion or other element of
public interest. Possible examples include
grey is the new black or
Barq's is the new A&W root beer.
This was also a key element in the 2001 film Josie and the Pussycats. The plot included government-sanctioned subliminal messages placed in popular music, including the frequently-repeated orange is the new pink. This phrase was later spoofed in the movie Legally Blonde (also released in 2001), when Reese Witherspoon's character quipped that "whoever said orange is the new pink was seriously disturbed."
