From the Greek allos, meaning 'other'.

A prefix meaning other, different, or isomeric.

In chemistry, this is the prefix used for the more stable of two geometrical isomers.

Sometimes written as all-, especially before a vowel (e.g. allegory).

Its antonym would be the Greek tauto-, 'the same'.
