In chess, a bad bishop is a bishop that is blocked by a players own, and/or an opponent's pawns, such that it is unlikely to get into the game any time soon, if ever.
In general, one should try to identify if one's opponent's bishops are "bad" or "good" and avoid freeing or trading for a bad bishop.
