Today is my mother's 88th birthday. In deference to the Stanley Cup and the Devils, she wants a pancake party on Sunday.

Yesterday I found out my brother-in-law passed away unexpectedly in his sleep. He had been a parole officer for 25 years and was planning on retiring this coming August. He and my husband's sister met through AA, becoming friends for fifteen years. One day, he surprised us all by getting down on one knee and asking for her hand in marriage. Together, they helped each other through sickness and health. Together, they helped many others maintain sobriety.

He was a regular guy, loved his wife, his job, watching television and reading books. He had a quirky sense of humor and could tell great stories. He was fascinated by Mayan culture and took many trips to see the ruins.
