A book by Jose Saramago about an epidemic of white blindness. This means that the sufferers do not live in a world of black that we find when we close our eyes, but surrounded by a bright milky white. The book focusses blind people who are quarantined from the rest of society and put in an abandoned mental hospital to avoid spread of disease. Read the book if you can stand to see the darkest side of humanity (this book is not for you if you have a weak stomach).

When I was little I had a nightlight that i left on everytime i went to sleep. One morning I awoke to find myself in complete and utter darkness. I had gone blind. After fumbling around for about 10 or 15 minutes I finally made it to the door of my room. With tears in my eyes, I pushed it open and discovered my sight had returned. I was later told by my mother that my nightlight had just burnt out.
