A bobeche is a circle of glass (well, all the ones I've seen have been glass) which fits around the bottom of a taper candle to protect the candle holder and table from melted wax dripping on them. They are often decorated, but their function is purely practical -- it's easier to get melted wax off glass than off the tablecloth or the crevices of a fancy candlestick.
