Checkerplate, also sometimes known as Diamondplate, metal with that funny criss-cross pattern of raised sections. Checkerplate increases traction and hence is widely used for metal walkways, you'll see it somewhere in just about any industrial area. Another place you'll see it is on trucks for the side steps. Metal grills are another good option when traction is required and allow liquids to easilly drain. However they tend to be difficult to clean, hence the use of checkerplate in places were cleanliness is important such as food processing plants.
