Under the convert-or-die fire of the Spanish Inquisition, some jews accepted baptism but continued to practice their ancestral religion in hiding; these new-christians were constantly under the scrutiny of their older-chrisitan neighboirs. Jewish rituals were often syncretic (i.e., mixed or hidden under a well-known christian practice).
