A term used to describe a lake, river or body of water that is poor in nutrients and oxygen.

Dystrophic bodies are lacking in dissolved mineral nutrients but rich in undecomposed organic matter such as plants. The lack of oxygen and nutrients results in little or no life supported in such bodies. Dystrophic bodies commonly form peat bogs and have a distinct brown colour from the peaty materials in solution.
