Unlike normal astronomy, which primarily focuses upon studying objects that are observable within the visual spectrum, gamma ray astronomy focuses upon the study of high energy (above a few hundred keV) objects and cosmic radiation in the universe that could lead to a better understanding of objects like quasars and blazars that emit this frequency of radiation.
COMPTEL is an orbiting gamma ray astronomy platform. TIGRE will eventually complement it.
