Scottish, (of Norse origin), word for the "bowl" which is formed when you cup your hands together.

The word is also used to refer to the amount that can be held in said cupped hands, or, more generally, to a large amount of something - 'a double handful'. It was usually used in the context of the amount of meal or grain that a miller would pay to his servants, (a gowpen of meal as payment in kind).
