single action pistols such as the
Colt 1911 and
Browning Hi Power hammer bite is the pinching and sometimes light
wounding of the
web of your
firing hand by the
recocking of the
hammer by the
backward movement of the
slide.
Though definitely not pleasant many in the shooting community consider this as some sort of rite of passage silly as it may be.
For the 1911 style pistols the most elegant solution is the replacement of the grip safety with a beavertail grip safety which makes it virtually impossible for the web of the shooting hand to be put in a position where it can get pinched by the hammer as it is recocked by the slide moving back in recoil.
The Colt 1911 is normally fired using a thumbs high grip although some people find other grip methods more comfortable. Unless you have very fat ham hands with bulldog wrinkles hammer bite can actually be prevented by practicing a proper grip on your pistol.
