Popular mid-Eighties arcade racing game from
Sega. Used a
scaling effect similar to that employed in
Space Harrier and
After Burner (suggesting
Yu Suzuki had some input on the game) to simulate riding a
motorbike at high speeds. Was ported to every home computer from the
Spectrum upwards, and built in to the original
Sega Master System console. A good way to torment a longtime
Sega zealot is to make the "Doot ... Doot ... Ding" noise that accompanied the starting lights at the beginning of the game.
Later returned to the arcade and Sega Mega Drive as Super Hang On, which was seemingly identical to the original. The basic premise was later borrowed by EA to make the Road Rash series, which added some much needed elements to the mix (such as decent graphics and actual gameplay).
