We sat outside on Saturday
and watched the stars.

"Isn't it amazing?"

"What?"

"That we're so small, and the stars are so huge?"

"Sometimes."

"It's an instant shock of perspective."

"And sometimes it's just a back-drop.

"You know what I remember? I did this huge project on stars in grade six. I learned everything there is to know about stars. But I forgot all of it, except for one thing. When we look at the sky, we're merely seeing an image of the sky as it was two-hundred years ago. It took that long for the light to get here. Lots of those stars have burned out by now."

"Ghost stars.

"You can't see the stars like this from my house. The lights from the city are too close."

"Maybe that's the appeal of the country. You don't lose yourself as easily. You know where you stand."

"Maybe."

"Shhhh..."
