In ichthyology, a caudal fin in which the notochord or vertebral column bends down into the tail lobe. The fin is attached to the upper edge of the tail lobe. (Think of a shark's tail, only inverted.) The only living example of this is the larvae of the sea lamprey. All other species with this characteristic disappeared by the end of the Devonian Age.
