A linguist is someone who studies language. There are several different types of linguistics. Linguistics is generally considered to be not a hard science, though it has tie-ins with math (logic) and computers (artificial intelligence). It also has tie-ins with sociology and history.

good people who study language and its effects on other disciplines such as psychology anthropology and cognitive science. Noam Chomsky is the grandfather of modern linguistics. In many respects, this also puts him as a big cheese in computational functionalism.
