A term coined by C. P. Snow in his lecture The Two Cultures to describe the proponents of the liberal arts, in particular those who do not believe that there can be any other form of intellectual in the scientific culture.
As he reports G. H. Hardy as saying:
    Have you noticed how the word "intellectual" is used nowadays? There seems to be a new definition which certainly doesn't include Rutherford or Eddington or Dirac or me. It does seem rather odd, don't y'know?".
